OVERVIEW
Just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains – perched above the James River – is a little watering hole in Lynchburg, Virginia where everybody knows your name. Sometimes strangers just have to ask it while furiously giving you a belly rub!
Visual Identity.
Web Design.
Creative Direction.
For brothers Dave & Chris Henderson, building community through food meant moving back home and opening a neighborhood hang where you don’t have to leave your kids (or dogs) at home just to enjoy a cold beer and watch the game!
From day one, The Water Dog has built itself around the idea of family & community. Two brothers partnering to create a place where the entire family can come hang with other entire families in the heart of the Lynchburg community: Downtown. And… it doesn’t matter how many legs your family members have.
So they reached out to Studiopoulos to create a visual identity for this concept that supports these overarching ideas of “family” and “community” while also making it something that is ownable for both them – the owners & staff of The Water Dog– as well as all the good folk that would also be calling this riverside bar & grill their “watering hole”, too.
THE VISUAL SOLUTION
DESIGN THINKING
A modern, minimal variation of a coat of arms was designed for The Water Dog to symbolize family & community. Family crests are unique marks that were once used to signify the assets of a particular House and showcasing to the rest of the community exactly what makes them strong.
Using a water droplet for the dog ear allows for the mark to remain minimal while giving onlookers a sort of “visual double entendre”; immediately connecting the logo with name and creating a foundation for all future brand recognition.
